They talked for hours, bringing Jolie up to date with everything including Blairâs return to the village. Darcy and Lauren, still perched on each side of the armchair, gradually warmed to Jolie, although Abigail and Emily remained cold. Hal found himself agreeing with everything Jolie said. She made a lot of sense, perhaps because she was a newcomer and saw everything more objectively.
Dewey told how he had first changed into a centaur while fleeing the violent storm on the island and had been chased through backyards by Miss Simone and a group of goblins. Jolie listened with wide eyes as he went on to explain the entire situation with the virus, concocted and unleashed by the centaurs in an attempt to cull the worldâboth worldsâof irresponsible humans.
âAlways meddling,â Jolie said, nodding. âI see their point of view. Youâre not to blame for any of this, Dewey. Centaurs are generally decent; it was just a few bad apples who lost their way and took things too far.â
Thatâs putting it mildly, Hal thought. But her words had a calming effect on Dewey. He smiled gratefully, evidently pleased she wasnât judging him.
âIf anything,â Jolie went on, frowning, âit was Simone that was at fault here. She really shouldnât have pushed the centaurs so far. She knew they were upset by the use of geo-rocks in homes, but she ignored their reasoning, calling it old-fashioned and stubborn. Just because she wants to advance technology in this world doesnât mean she has a right to. Itâs fine to give a little power to a home, like these magic glowing lightsââshe gestured to the lamp glowing dimly on the tableââbut where does it end? Maybe the centaurs had the right idea. I mean, killing everyone was going too far, obviously, but putting an end to the use of geo-rocks . . . well, maybe that would be for the best.â
âDonât you start,â Abigail said with disgust.
Jolie turned her head and shot her a glance. Abigail visibly recoiled, stiffening in her seat. Hal couldnât see the glare itself because Jolieâs black hair blocked his view, tumbling in front of her face.
Then she continued in an even voice. âPerhaps this phoenix you mentioned is a timely reminder not to meddle with nature. Perhaps the phoenix, Jacob, is a messenger of Mother Nature herself, sent to put things right, to reset the world.â She looked around and slowly pushed her black hair aside. âNature is far more powerful than any of us realize. We miengu have powers you know nothing about, powers that canât be explained by science.â
âLike what?â Emily asked quietly. She sounded nervous, as though she, too, had felt the effect of the glare directed at Abigail moments before.
Jolie was silent as she looked around the room. Then she lowered her voice. âWe can heal sick people. We can take the sickness right out of the body. Thatâs why your friend Molly has been visiting us for so many years, offering her services as public executioner, trying
